Every image generator can now produce a competent picture. Midjourney's difference is that its default output — the thing you get with a lazy one-line prompt — looks art-directed: composed, lit, graded like someone with taste made choices. Rivals reach similar heights with effort; Midjourney starts there. For mood boards, concept art, covers, and anything where the brief is fundamentally 'make it gorgeous,' that head start is the product.
The old accessibility complaint has aged out: the web app means you no longer need to learn Discord to use it, and organising, rerunning, and refining generations is now a normal product experience. What hasn't aged out is the control ceiling. Getting precisely the image in your head — this layout, that object placement, readable text — still involves negotiation and rerolls. It rewards an exploratory temperament and frustrates an exacting one; know which you are before subscribing, especially since there's no free tier to find out cheaply.
A wrinkle nobody discusses enough: the signature look cuts both ways now. Midjourney's aesthetic is distinctive enough that audiences increasingly clock it as AI-made on sight, which matters if your use is commercial and your brand needs to feel handmade. The style-reference tools can pull it off its defaults — but that's the effort the effortless pitch was supposed to save.
Practical notes for buyers: plans differ on how much you can generate at full speed, whether your images are publicly visible, and the commercial terms that apply to your business size — ten minutes reading the plan table prevents real surprises. And the copyright status of AI-generated art remains legally unsettled in most places; for high-stakes commercial work, that's a conversation with a lawyer, not a settings toggle.
Verdict: the strongest pure-aesthetics tool, now wrapped in a normal product. Buy it for beauty at low effort. If your work needs precision, embedded text, or contractual tidiness — or you just want to learn free — a bundled generator inside an AI assistant you already pay for may serve you better.
