Every AI assistant claims to help with writing. The test that separates them is not the first paragraph they produce — they all produce a competent first paragraph — it is the tenth revision of a piece you actually care about, where most assistants drift into the same smooth, forgettable register no matter what you ask. Claude drifts least. Its drafts read like a careful colleague's, its edits respect what you wrote instead of paving over it, and when you feed it something long and messy, it holds the thread.
That second part is the practical differentiator. Claude has an unusually large appetite for context: long contracts, meeting-transcript archives, a novel manuscript, a semester of lecture notes. Work that arrives in volume is where subscribers report it pulling clearly ahead — you hand it the whole thing rather than rationing chapters, and its answers reference page two hundred as readily as page two.
Projects, the organising feature, deserves more attention than it gets. You give a project its reference files and standing instructions once, and every conversation inside it starts already briefed. For repeat work — a client whose voice you must match, a codebase you keep asking about — this is the difference between an assistant and a stranger you re-introduce yourself to daily.
What you give up relative to ChatGPT is the ecosystem: no image generation, fewer plug-ins and party tricks, a slower drip of shiny new features. Anthropic's restraint also shows up in behaviour — Claude declines some grey-area requests that rivals will attempt, which the target audience rarely hits but occasional users notice. And the usage ceiling on heavy days is real here too; no subscription at this tier offers truly unlimited access to the best models.
The buying logic is straightforward. If your relationship with an AI assistant is fundamentally about text — reading a lot of it, writing a lot of it, caring how the result sounds — Claude Pro is the better tool and the calmer product. If you want one subscription that also talks, draws, and entertains, the default choice remains the default for a reason.
