Nobody's actual job is taking minutes, which is why the person doing it contributes least to the meeting. Otter's pitch is to fire that person — it joins the call, transcribes in real time, and produces a summary with action items before you've refilled your coffee. For the meeting-heavy, the value isn't any single transcript but the archive: six months in, 'search what we said' quietly becomes something you can't imagine losing.
Treat the transcript as a very good draft rather than a record. Clear audio and standard accents transcribe impressively; crosstalk, strong accents, and your industry's jargon produce errors — sometimes comic, occasionally meaning-inverting. The same goes for summaries, which can promote a floated idea into an apparent decision. Our rule: navigate by the summary, but verify any consequential line against the recording before acting on it or, worse, forwarding it.
Two behaviours need attention at setup. Out of the box Otter is eager — left on defaults, its bot can auto-join calendar meetings you never asked it to attend, which is how it ends up in a sensitive conversation announcing itself to a client. Spend the five minutes taming those settings. And remember recording is a social act: laws and basic decency both say the room should know. The tool won't handle that for you.
Within those fences, it's an easy recommendation, and the free tier's monthly allowance means you can find out against your real calendar whether you're a heavy enough meeting-goer to pay. Light users often discover free is plenty — which is itself a fair verdict on where this category's pricing sits.
